Summary:

Disassembles, cleans, assembles, sterilizes, and stores procedure trays, instruments, equipment and supplies according to prescribed procedures and aseptic technique under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager of Surgical Services. Completes requests to dispense equipment and supplies and assists in maintaining and processing and maintaining department inventory.

Responsibilities:

Central Service Technician 1. Sterilizes instruments, equipment, utensils, linen and supplies using various types of autoclaves and aerators. Loads autoclaves in the prescribed manner and set controls to specified time and temperature according to material and requirements of items being sterilized. Completes appropriate documentation records prior to sterilization. Reads and initials autoclave graph to verify appropriate sterilization cycle and provides required records for inspection. 2. Assembles all instrument procedure trays, packs and kits according to the prescribed manner using content lists as a guide. Wraps packages and handles all items following procedure. Marks items with identifying data and distributes or stores in designated area. Notifies supervisor when unable to replace parts or when equipment is deficient in the work area. 3. Dispenses products requested for sterile and non-sterile equipment and supplies. Assigns priority to emergency requests and issues required supplies and equipment based on knowledge of procedure intended. Assembles and wraps materials, instruments and supplies according to established aseptic technique. 4. Disassembles and cleans equipment such as suction machines, IV monitors, heating pumps, using approved disinfectants, detergents, soaps and cleaners. Reassembles equipment after cleaning and operates to test for proper functioning. Replaces lost or damaged parts such as tubes, containers and connectors from stock on hand. Completes required forms and transfers inoperable equipment to the appropriate holding area for repair. 5. Maintains assigned work areas and equipment in a clean and organized condition to maintain required standards for handling sterilized and clean materials and to maintain a safe work environment. 6. Assists in orientation of new employees to each work assignment area and overall department operation. 7. Performs other related duties as required such as examining sterilization/expiration dates; reporting inoperable equipment; making visual inventory inspections to maintain adequate stock and supply levels; tests effectiveness of autoclave function by assembling and placing culture spore tests following procedure; stores new and reprocessed equipment and supplies; cleans shelves and work areas and mops liquid spills from floors as necessary. Cross-training within the surgical service. 8. Senior Technician a. Co-ordinates and adheres to regulatory standards b. Accepts the challenge of additions to department workload and responsibility. c. Demonstrates excellent leadership and communication skills in coordinating the activities of the CSP department d. Responsible for enforcing the department policies and procedures with the technicians. e. Demonstrates a multidisciplinary approach to technicians and ancillary departments f. Assists the Director in formulating new policies and procedures. g. Demonstrates independence in conducting and contributing to projects which relate to new procedures, products or methods in the department. h. Responsible for orienting and training new personnel i. Performs other duties as assigned Professional Requirements: 1. Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean. 2. Completes annual education requirements. (Look for education material I In Excel.) 3. Meets all mandatory in-services and takes advantage of other learning opportunities Attends annual review and department in-services as scheduled. 4. Attends at least 75%__ staff meetings annually, read all monthly staff meeting minutes. 5. Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner. 6. Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities. 7. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. 8. Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department. 9. Displays positive behavior toward physician, co-worker, patient and family by demonstrating sensitivity to needs, and providing support. 10. Complies with Inland Hospital Hand Hygiene Standards. 11. Adheres to Inland Hospital Standards of Behavior. 12. Performs other essential duties as assigned.
