Hirschbach Motor Lines VP of Software Engineering in Dubuque, Iowa

The Vice President (VP) of Engineering at Hirschbach Motor Lines will be responsible for leading the engineering organization, aligning engineering strategies with business objectives, and fostering and innovative, efficient, and inclusive work environment. This role is pivotal in driving technological advancements and ensuring that the engineering team contributes effectively to the company's goals. 

Responsibilities:

Leadership and Strategic Direction:

  • Drive the CTO's Strategic Vision: Implement and refine the technological strategy set by the CTO, ensuring alignment with the company's business goals. 

  • Team Leadership and Development: Lead and inspire the engineering team; develop a robust talent pipeline and succession plans. Mentor directors, senior managers, and other key team members, facilitating their professional growth and skill development. 

  • Foster Engineering Culture: Cultivate a psychologically safe and inclusive work environment that encourages innovation and collaboration. 

  • Organizational Structure: Refine and improve the engineering organization's structure to enhance efficiency, clarity, and responsiveness to rapidly changing business needs. 

  • Strategic Buy vs. Build Decisions: Make informed decisions on whether to develop solutions in-house or purchase from external vendors, considering factors such as cost, scalability, and alignment with business goals. 

  • Fostering Partnerships: Establish and maintain strategic relationships with third-party technology providers to ensure access to the best tools and technologies, enhancing the capabilities of the engineering team. 

    Operational Management:

  • Project and Resource Management: Oversee multiple project timelines, budgets, and resource allocations, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget. 

  • Process and Workflow Improvement: Continually assess and optimize workflows and processes to enhance team efficiency and product throughput. 

  • Quality Assurance: Maintain high standards for software quality, security, and performance. Oversee the incident management process, including quality control of Root Cause Analyses (RCAs). 

    Financial Oversight and Technology Spending: 

  • Budget Management: Develop, monitor, and control the engineering department's budget to ensure optimal allocation of resources and cost efficiency. 

  • Technology Investment Decisions: Evaluate and approve investments in new technologies and systems that align with the strategic vision and maximize ROI.

  • Cost Management: Identify opportunities to reduce costs and improve financial efficiency without compromising on quality or performance. 

  • Financial Planning and Reporting: Work closely with the CRO and the Finance department to forecast technology spending and report on expenditure, ensuring transparency and accountability. 

    Technical Resourcing: 

  • Hiring Strategy: Work closely with HR and other stakeholders to develop and implement a hiring strategy that attracts and retains top engineering talent. 

  • Employee Motivation and Retention: Implement strategies to retain high-performing engineers and reduce turnover, ensuring that employees are engaged, motivated, and satisfied at their work. 

  • Supplementing Resourcing with Offshore Engineering Talent: Strategically utilize offshore engineering teams to complement and enhance resource allocation, ensuring seamless integration and collaboration across geographically dispersed teams. 

    Communication and Collaboration:

  • Maintain Open Lines of Communication: Ensure clear and open communication across all levels of the engineering team and with the other departments, facilitating cross-functional collaboration and innovation. 

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Regularly interact with stakeholders to ensure that the engineering team's work aligns with business needs and market demands. 

    Standards of Performance: 

  • Delivery of Goals: Measured by the successful implementation of strategic initiatives and the timeline delivery of projects. 

  • Team Growth and Heath: Assessed through team performance metrics, employee retention rates, and peer feedback. 

  • Innovation and Improvement: Evaluated by the introduction of new technologies, improvements in the processes, and the overall impact on the company's technology offerings. 

    Talent Requirements:

  • Education:

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. 

  • Preferred: Master's degree or higher in Engineering or Management.

  • Experience:

  • Extensive Leadership Experience: Proven track record in leading engineering teams and developing high-quality technological products. 

  • Strategic Planning and Execution: Demonstrable experience in strategic planning and execution within a technology-driven environment. 

  • Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices in engineering and change management. 

  • Skills:

  • Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge in software design, data structures, and algorithms. 

  • Leadership: Exceptional leadership abilities to guide, motivate, and manage a diverse team. 

  • Project Management: Robust project management skills to handle multiple, simultaneous projects. 

  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to think strategically and integrate strategic business goals into actionable plans. 

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, crucial for effective team management and stakeholder engagement.
